The 5 NOT-TO-DO Lists for Chronic Pain

To-do lists are a lifesaver when it comes to prioritizing our hectic schedules. For patients suffering from chronic pain consider this “not-to-do” list as your ultimate to-do list and are small steps towards achieving a better quality of life!

1. Don’t say, “yes” to activities that your body is saying “no” to.

Whether it is an activity with your friend or family, limit the activity to something you know your body can handle. If taking a stroll at the park will increase your joint pain, say no for once. Or if yoga class sounds like you will stretch a muscle, ease up with stretches and see how your body feels before agreeing to take the class.

2. Do not call bring yourself down with name-calling.

“I’m so clumsy…” “I’m so weak…” “Why did I do this, I’m so stupid…”

If you don’t like others calling you names then you should not do it to yourself. Treat yourself kindly and you will feel more at ease with your pain. A good test for whether you’re treating yourself kindly is to ask if you would speak or act that way towards a loved one in need. If the answer is no, then do yourself a painless favor and treat yourself better and you will instantly feel the power to be stronger.

3. Don’t try a treatment just because it worked for someone else.

Depending on an individual’s condition, it is possible to spontaneously recover from an ongoing illness – but that really depends on the individuals body and how long they have been dealing with their chronic pain.

4. Do not wait until the last minute to get ready.

Waiting too long to get ready can make you feel rushed at the end resulting in stress. The “draining sensation” of stress causing pain is the first sign of a mental crash. Instead of waiting till the very end, try doubling the amount of time you think you will take. This will take the stress of your shoulders and give you more time to prepare for unexpected moments.

5. Do not wear uncomfortable clothing.

Do not subject to restrictive tops or tight pants and high heels. If there is a special occasion that will give you a mental lift if you break this rule then go for it. But remember your reasons for breaking it so that you don’t slip into a negative self-judgment (not-to-do list #2).
