Radiofrequency Ablation Treats:

What to Expect

At Centers of Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine, our pain specialists spend time with each patient to identify, diagnose and treat their conditions. During the initial consultation, the doctor will perform a physical exam and perform any necessary tests to diagnose their condition. They will also discuss the patient’s symptoms and medical history to understand the scope of their pain. Then the doctor will create a personalized radiofrequency ablation treatment plan to address the pain. The number of treatment sessions will vary from patient to patient.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Ablation

  • No surgery required
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Decrease medication use
  • Improved functionality
  • Pain relief
  • Low complication rate
  • No extensive recovery required
To prepare the area, a local anesthetic will be administered to the damaged region of the body. Using x-ray guidance, the doctor will insert the injection to begin treatment. A numbing agent will be given to the patient at this time. Then a radiofrequency current is distributed through this injection to either disrupt the nerve signals or destroy the nerve entirely. Each individual treatment session may take anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour to complete.

Recovery

Patients should arrange a ride home following the treatment. They are able to return to all normal activities within 24 hours of the procedure. Patients may experience soreness around the injection site. Pain will begin to subside within 10 days of the radiofrequency ablation. Results will can last anywhere from three months to a year. After the treatment, the doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the recovery process.
